In the end, 15 teams turned out for the bird count on Sunday January 7th with team numbers ranging from 1-4 and 35 of us met up at the village hall for a round-up and tea and cakes at the end of the day. Leader: Alan Hughes
Reporter: Mandy Etherington Species List: Seamus O’Dowd About a dozen of us met in the small car park of St Benet's Abbey on a cold grey day in November. Almost immediately a Short-eared Owl was spotted over the field in front of the car park. We had really good views of it quartering over the rough grass before it finally went down in some reeds. It was one of three we saw from the car park, along with a number of Fieldfare and a distant view of a large flock of Lapwing. Leader: Steve Chapman
Reporters: Stuart and Marion Malone Species List: David Laurie Pre-meeting travel arrangements worked well and an enthusiastic group of 14 souls set off eastwards in cool, unexpectedly overcast conditions. Unbeknown to the group a very special day lay ahead. Within 200m many sightings were observed, giving David Laurie the hard task of recording them as they were rapidly called out. Leader and Reporter: Chris Stone
6 Wensum valley members including myself met in the car park at 8.30 am on a damp windy morning. I told them the plan for the day and that our target was 80 species for the day - a high target but that was the challenge. We walked through the picnic area as the rain was getting harder, and through to the visitor’s centre. |
