A Field Trip to Welney and the Surrounding Area

Sunday 29th November

Leader/coordinator: David Gibbons

Itinerary for the day.
Meet 9.00 am. at Denver Sluice, PE38 0EQ, there is a car park here, we will survey the River
Great Ouse looking for Red-breasted Merganser, Geese and water fowl etc, possible Bittern. On
a previous visit here we watched a Bittern for 45 minutes! I have been back at least 6 times since
and have not seen one again!!!
Wellingtons recommended it is often very muddy in this area.
Leaving here we will continue to Welney Wetland Centre, PE14 9TN, just a few miles down the
road. We will be looking for Bewick’s Swans and Common Cranes as we slowly scan the Fens as
we drive along these quiet roads.
I envisage we take lunch after visiting the main hide where we will see the wildlife spectacle of
hundreds of over-wintering wildfowl including Whooper Swans. Many wading species can also be
seen around the site. Bird feeders around the Centre are usually very active.
Our final stop will be at RSPB Ouse Washes. Again car-parking and toilets available here.
Tree Sparrow is a target bird here, usually seen at the Visitor Centre overlooking the feeding
stations.
We can walk along the banks of the river, to one of the many hides, looking over fields which flood
most years, with views towards the city of Ely and its Cathedral in the distance. In these flooded
fields again there will be plenty of wildfowl.
Due to Coronavirus I have had to book tickets for entry to Welney Wetland Centre.
The centre is fully coronavirus compliant, toilets are open. Take-away drinks and food available,
but we would have to consume them outside.
I have booked for 6, the maximum I am allowed, so there are 5 places for members to join me.
If you are interested please e-mail me ASAP to confirm your place.

If there is a greater demand it will require another person to book more tickets.
Not knowing the demographics, of the possible group, I have paid for 3 Adults and 3 Concessions,
a total of £44.97. Thus the ticket cost will be £7.50pp.
I trust you will pay me on the day!!!
I trust this is of interest to you and I look forward to hearing from you.
David Gibbons.
