September Highlights from Pensthorpe.

Saturday 19th September 2 of our members Barry Pummell & Ian Doble were on the case. The
weather was sunny & warm but with a strong easterly breeze.
An Osprey was seen briefly being mobbed by a Jackdaw before heading towards Fakenham.
4 sightings of an Osprey, probably the same bird, with great views over Old Squaw Lake.
3 Marsh Harriers together 1 male with 2 juveniles/females.
1 Common Sandpiper and 2 Green Sandpipers.
High numbers of Greylag Geese with 250, as for ducks, they waded in with
55 Gadwall, 60 Teal, 72 Mallards and always nice to see 2 Pintails.
3 Little Grebes and 1 Great Crested Grebe, 3 Common Snipe, 3 Little Egrets and 3 Grey Herons.
Adding a bit of colour along came a Kingfisher.
With the warblers 5 Cetti’s, 3 Chiffchaff and 1 Blackcap were recorded.
62 species of birds at the end of the day with a total bird count of 1066.

Dragonflies & Damselflies.
8 Common Darters, 8 Migrant Hawkers, 5 Willow Emeralds, 1 Common Blue Damselfly, 2 Ruddy
Darters and a single Brown Hawker.

Butterflies.
5 Speckled Woods 1 Comma and a single Green-veined White.

Mammals.
Finishing the days’ recording with 2 Stoats and 4 Grey Squirrels.

Intrepid members Steve Chapman & Steve Connor were on the bird count on Wednesday 9th
September. With a mild slightly breezy start but it got calmer and sunnier as the day progressed.
Highlights: 50+ Migrant Hawkers quite a large number!
At least 4 Cetti’s singing from various locations, a very high count of Chiffchaffs, around 20 seen. 2
Blackcaps also noted along with 2 Whitethroats.
A juvenile Kingfisher which shows proof of breeding at this site.
Swallows streaming through on migration, at least 50 birds, and a single Sand Martin also recorded.
As far as geese sightings went, there were in excess of 150 Greylag and 70+ Egyptian.
Around 180 Mallard, 36 Gadwall, c100 Teal, 2 Mandarin Ducks and, good to see, 2 Pintails.
Raptors saw 4 Buzzards, 1 Red Kite and a single Marsh Harrier.
2 Grey Herons and 2 Little Egrets, 3 Great Spotted Woodpeckers and 1 Green Woodpecker.

Always super to watch 2 Tawny Owls.
2 flocks to note, 32 Goldfinch and c300 Lapwing.
67 species in total.

Dragonflies & Damselflies.
7 Common Darters, 50+ Migrant Hawkers, 1 Willow Emerald, 3 Common Blue Damselfly, 2 Ruddy
Darters and 2 Brown Darter.

Butterflies.
1 Comma, 3 Small Coppers, 8 Small Whites & 2 Large Whites and 3 Red Admirals.
