Field Trip: Nightjar Evening 17th June

Twenty members enjoyed a convivial evening at the Marsham Arms before progressing on to Marsham Heath towards dusk to view the summering Nightjars that have become established there over recent years.

The overcast and cool weather conditions were not very conducive to encouraging the birds to display but shortly after our arrival a male bird was heard churring close-by and subsequently flew to give us brief sighting.  Some quiet patience was required as other birds were heard and seen in the distance.  A Woodcock overhead lifted our expectations and shortly afterwards another Nightjar showed nearby.  Soon afterwards the light conditions deteriorated so we departed quietly leaving the heath once more to our enigmatic visitors from Africa.
