Thursday 26th June – Nightjar Evening

 co-ordinator Richard Norris

Join us in the car park at Marsham Heath by 2100 hrs (grid ref TG173232). Please note the original car park is now closed to vehicular traffic, however there is limited parking in the entrance and also in another entry just down the road to Marsham, if these are full please use the verge on one side only. There is some very uneven ground in the old car park so please be very careful coming back in the dark.

The Nightjars will probably appear after sundown, about 21.45 ish and it can turn cold so wrap up warm and don’t forget that Nightjars feed on insects mainly moths but there will possibly be a good few gnats that will feed on you so insect repellent may help. A small torch will also come in handy for the short walk back to the cars. If there a lot of people present it may be necessary to split into two groups and please try to keep the noise down to a reasonable level so we don’t frighten the Nightjars away. Don’t be put off if it is raining earlier as it will possibly dry out later and we have been there in light rain and still seen Nightjars (so a umbrella may be handy in such a case), but we’re sure it will be fine. A nice night has been ordered! Please sign the Attendance Sheet at our indoor meetings if you wish to join us.

The birds are easily disturbed by noise and we ask that both for your enjoyment and also for those of the group that may never have never experienced the sight and sound of these mysterious nocturnal birds, levels are kept to a minimum,
