Sunday 26th September: The Length of the Valley – Part 2
People sometimes ask about the places named on the bird list published in the Newsletter: what about all these places in Lenwade or is it Great Witchingham? Where are they? This early autumn walk will take you round the village(s) and show you where Lenwade Mill, Lenwade Bridge, Great Witchingham Common (or is it Lenwade Common?) and a few other places are. With any luck we’ll see lake, river and woodland species and a few passage migrants. I promise nothing but the fisherman swear that Ospreys steal their fish in the autumn, and we’ll go to the best place I know for Nuthatches and Treecreepers.
Meet at 9 a.m. at the Bridge Inn, Lenwade (A1067, grid reference TG 102183) just across the bridge from the junction for the Dinosaur Park and Bernard Matthews. Use the grass car park though the gate. We’ll take a circular walk along tarmac, woodland and grassy paths, mainly level ground, aiming to be back at the pub around 1 to 1.30 in time for lunch if you’d like it.
If there’s been a lot of rain the ground may be squidgy in parts but the area that can be boggy will be avoided if it means I might get my feet wet. So wear suitable shoes or boots, bring appropriate raingear or sunhats, and perhaps a flask of coffee for a mid-morning break.
Your leader is Jacky Pett. Please sign the list at the next meeting and indicate whether you might like to stay for lunch so I can give the pub due warning.
NOTE 1: if you want lunch please go into the pub and order when you arrive at the car park. We will phone them when we are on the way back so we can avoid lengthy waits if there are lots of Sunday lunchers.
NOTE 2: There are roadworks, due to close the main road through Great Witchingham, anticipated to start on Sept 20th for two weeks. Access to the pub will be from the Norwich side only, so if coming from the west, find alternative routes.
