Sunday 14th May – A Field Trip to Vine House Farm

coordinator Mary Walker

This is an early warning notice due to the nature of the trip.

Meet at Vine House Farm  Deeping St Nicholas PE11 3DG  (TF 205150) at 9.00 a.m prompt.

Nicholas Watts MBE gave a brilliant talk to our society in 2016 about changes in bird movements and numbers, and subsequently has invited members to visit his farm.

A fourth generation farmer, Nicholas has worked the land at Vine House farm since he was a boy. His passion for birds has shaped his method of wildlife friendly farming. Vine House Farm also trades as a bird food company with a difference, much of the seed it supplies is grown on its conservation winning land.

Nicholas was presented with a BBC Springwatch Unsprung Wildlife Hero award in 2016 after showing Springwatch presenter Martin Hughes-Games and a film crew around his 400 acres of bird seed producing land.

The programme for the day is as follows:-

  • Tea Coffee will be provided on arrival
  • Introduction and ten minute talk from Nicholas Watts
  • Depart around the farm on a tractor and trailer stopping at various places
  • BBQ early lunch which should finish about 12.30pm
  • Tour of Bird Food factory
  • Toilet facilities are available

Vine House Farm  is on the side of the A16 road in the village of Deeping St Nicholas, which is half way between Spalding & Market Deeping. The farm is 300 yards on the Market Deeping side of the railway level crossing.

Please try and support this event. Family and friends are welcome to join us. Please let Mary know if you are willing to car share/offer/require a lift. We will try and help. We need a minimum of 25 visitors to make the trip viable and if there is insufficient support from the club we will offer places to adjoining clubs. Therefore it would be helpful if you could buy your tickets as soon as possible.

Cost is £10 per person which includes a BBQ lunch and is payable in advance. Mary will be collecting names/monies at the March & April Indoor meetings. The BBQ will be mainly pork products grown and produced on a farm five miles away. A vegetarian Option is available if ordered at the time of booking.
