Saturday 24th June – An all day Wensum Valley Stroll

Leader – David Gibbons

Whitwell Common, Alderford Common and on to the Wensum

We start, 9.00 am at Whitwell Common.  NR10 4RF.     Grid Ref: TG088206.

Car parking is limited and wellies are recommended as this area of 20 hectares is very boggy in places. It is a SSSI site has some reedbed, open space and wooded areas. We will also look for birds in the immediate surrounding area  and would envisage around 30 species of birds.

Following this, coffee and facilities will be available at a nearby venue.

Next a quick scan around Eades Mill, again car parking is limited and use of verges and farm gateways should solve the problem. Possible 10 to 15 species of birds here.

Along to Alderford Common, NR9 5NG. Grid Ref: TG129184. on the Reepham to Norwich road, there is a small car park on the right after the bridge at Alderford. A drier site with a couple flights of steps along the paths. Again a SSSI site of 17 hectares.

Woodland, farmland birds and some raptors will be our targets.

Packed lunch could be taken here, there are a few benches in the Common but your own chair may be useful.

Down to the Wensum at Lenwade, perhaps a stop at a local watering hole for a drink and a scan by the river then along to a car park by the Marriotts Way for a stroll along the river to end the day.
