Outdoor Meeting: Saturday June 22nd. Holme Dunes & Dersingham Bog. Co-ordinator Alan Hughes

1. Holme Dunes NWT Please meet in the car park adjacent to the NWT Visitor Centre (nb. Not the NOA Bird Observatory) at 2.00pm. The postcode for this is PE36 6LQ and grid reference is OS132 TF 714 449. Access to the NWT site is via a long private drive, which first of all passes a number of private home and ends at the NWT centre. Please note that there are limited passing places along this drive, and a few poorly visible speed bumps. If you are a member, please bring your membership card to avoid a £3.50 entrance fee. The visitor centre has toilet facilities in the car park, and a small café that serves drinks, snacks and light lunches if anyone would like to arrive early. We will have 3 hours at this lovely reserve: We can explore the dunes and paddocks and its trees & bushes for birds, as well as possible Natterjack Toads and some rare plants, including some orchids. We will then go along to the 3 hides that overlook the wader scrapes. There may also be time to visit one of the Little Tern nesting areas on the beach. We will re-assemble at our cars at 4.45 pm as the reserve closes at 5.00pm.

2. Eric’s Fish and Chip Restaurant There is then a 3 mile car journey to this place for our supper: Leave the reserve and Holme village and turn left onto the A149. The restaurant is on the left (along with a few other shops) before you enter the village of Thornham. The postcode is PE36 6LS. They charge around £10 for fish and chips (other meals are available) – slightly less if you go for a takeaway meal which can be eaten at picnic tables outside the restaurant

3. Dersingham Bog NNR After supper we will turn right and drive 16 miles along the A149 west then south around the outskirts of Hunstanton and in the direction of Kings Lynn. Turn right at the side road signposted Wolferton, bear right at the crossroads (adjacent to the Scissors car park) and continue to the next car park on the right as this has space for more cars (if you reach Wolferton village you have gone too far!). The postcode for this is PE31 6HF and the grid reference is OS132 TF 663 285. There is a short walk down some steep but well-made steps to the wet heathland area where we can look for a number of bird species (including Grasshopper Warbler, Tree Pipits, owls, raptors) and then Nightjars once dusk falls. Sunset on this day is 9.30pm.

Please take a small torch and insect repellent.

A Sign- up sheet will be available at the indoor meetings: Please indicate if you only want to attend for 1 or 2 parts of this trip.
