The weather in January remained very mild generally with above average temperatures, the warmest January since 1916. There was one colder interlude around the 22nd to 26th. A predominantly south-westerly air stream brought cloud and rain throughout the month with a few drier spells. There were strong winds on the 18th but the end of the month became settled with high pressure bringing plenty of dry, but cloudy conditions.
Thank you to everyone who sent in records during 2006 and good birding in 2007.

The mild weather has meant relatively few winter visitors have arrived but some birds are now flocking. Sparham Hall Farm has a significant flock of Linnet, Yellowhammer and Reed Bunting. Only 1 flock of (15 ) Siskin has been recorded.

There were good movements of Fieldfare at the beginning of the Nov but most had moved through (SW) by mid-month. While in much fewer numbers Redwing stayed all month. Only 3 records of 1 or 2 Brambling so far and no Siskin reported at all.
After an excellent set of records for June the number received in July has been rather disappointing. The first returning Golden Plovers were reported from Worthing and a Cattle Egret caused a degree of excitement until Pensthorpe acknowledged its loss.

The Bird Race on 4th / 5th of June produced many good records that we otherwise would not have received. Do consider entering next year. I’ve also obtained records from the Pensthorpe Log which have not been available to us before.
