Siskins visiting Gardens by Alwyn Jackson

The number of Siskins that visit gardens each year depends on a couple of factors. Firstly, BTO Garden Bird Watch data have shown that more Siskins visit gardens in years when the Sitka Spruce crop is poor. Secondly, research has shown that Siskins are more likely to visit gardens on wet days. This is because the Alder cones that they like to feed on are closed in wet conditions. When it it’s dry, the cones open, so you are less likely to see them in your garden! Therefore, look out for these lively finches in your gardens and if you see any notice what the weather is like!
