My First Ringing Experience – David Knight

I had only just become a member of the Wensum Valley Birdwatching Society when, on the 5th August 2004, I was taken to Boughton Fen by friend and fellow member, Barry Pummell, to see some bird ringing for the first time. It was a lovely warm summer evening. At the bridge over the stream I met up with Allan Hale and Ray Gribble, also for the first time, experienced ringers and fellow members of WVBS, who had their net up over the stream at the bridge. I was intrigued by the process and science of netting and ringing birds and took the opportunity in later years to see many more.

The highlight of the evening was the capture of a kingfisher. I had never seen one so close -up and the colour and detail of the feathers was something else. Other birds were netted that evening but nothing compared with the kingfisher.
