Making the most of opportunities 26 Apr 2010

On the 26th of March, Geoff and I set off to Shrewsbury for two nights with our daughter. On the Friday morning we collected Karen from work and set off to Bristol to see our son, partner and 7 month old grandaughter. We knew the Bufflehead was in Dorset and we had a day to kill on the Saturday, so we set off on a mission with Karen in tow. We arrived at Abbotsbury Swannery to be informed the charge was £9 .50p per person entry fee, so we abandoned that idea which was just as well as the bird could not be seen from there that day.

We decided to drive round to the beach car park at £3 parking charge and walk along Chesil beach. What a trek. It must have been a good mile and a quarter on shingly gravel. I was carrying my scope on my back as well; I hadn’t trained for this. Finally we caught up with the bird 1/2 mile past the tank traps! Was it worth it?  Oh yes,a super little duck and a lifer for us.

We also had a bonus. We caught up with the Alpine Swift at Radipole, Weymouth being as we were out of the county and missing the ones in Norfolk.
