Lockdown at Haveringland by Steve Chapman

A diary of my time spent almost entirely at my home in Haveringland Hall Park. No visitors, and
venturing out only to go to the supermarket every week or fortnight. Each day I would do a
circuit of the park (approx. 3 miles) and note down what I saw or heard.
My first day of lockdown after getting back from visiting my brother in Malaysia last night.
Haveringland Hall Park (HH) 80+ Fieldfare, c40 Redwing hidden in ivy, Brambling, 7 singing
Chiffchaffs, 2 Reed Bunting, 4 drumming Great-spotted Woodpeckers, Water Rail, 4
Mistle Thrush, 20 Teal
25-Mar HH 18 Magpies fly out of the Poplars opposite me at 0530h
25-Mar Pair of Swallows flying east at Marsham Heath plus singing Woodlark. Little Owl in ivycovered oak on Cawston Heath
26-Mar Four new on the HH (Haverlingland Hall) walking circuit this am – Bullfinch, Pied Wagtail,
Lesser Black-backed Gull, Siskin. 4 Buzzard including a pair mating.
26-Mar Pair of Bullfinch new.
27-Mar Resolve to restrict my daily exercise only to Haveringland Park, woods and adjacent fields.
29-Mar Fairly brisk walk round HH was fairly quiet. New birds were 3 Greylags and a Feral Pigeon.
Still c150 Fieldfare on the horse field with a handful of Redwing and Starlings with them. First
Stock Dove seen.
30-Mar Had 2 Oystercatcher over flying S calling and my first Yellowhammer singing on my walk this
morning. Still c150 Fieldfare.
31-Mar First Canada Goose. Walking in the woods at dusk heard 3 or 4 Tawny Owls.
01-Apr Did a Birdtrack list this am as I hadn’t done one for a week. Highlights 100 Redwing in 1 field
and 200+ Fieldfare, 150 in paddock and 50 over. Also first Grey Heron and Common Gulls.
02-Apr 3 Oystercatcher flew over early morning and still 200+ Fieldfare. First Treecreeper heard and
first Red Kite seen.
03-Apr First Kestrel, seen from the garden. Three Goldcrest new. Also first Little Owl at HH, heard
late evening.
04-Apr Butterfly walk: first Brimstone, Comma, Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell recorded.

05-Apr 2 Swallows flew through fast NE – first records for HH.
06-Apr First Willow Warbler, singing in sallows bordering the small lake. 80 Fieldfare still here early
but left at 0845 (flushed by worker?). At least 6 Brambling near the old moat, pair of Linnet
new for the list. Tufted numbers now 40+ but Teal are now less than 20
08-Apr Pair of Shelduck arrive on the main lake – new for lockdown. Also 7 Fallow Deer in adjacent
field – buck and 6 does.
08-Apr First Blackcap.
09-Apr First Garden Warbler heard singing. First Holly Blue and Orange Tip butterflies.
12-Apr Barn Owl at 6.30 am. First one I’ve seen at HH since moving here. Also 3 Egyptian Geese
new.
14-Apr First Sand Martins seen.
16-Apr First Cuckoo heard
20-Apr Hobby feeding over the lake – first of the year. First Swift also, high above the lake.
23-Apr 6 Oystercatchers flew over N.
25-Apr First Lesser Whitethroat heard singing
28-Apr First damselflies – Large Red and Common Blue
30-Apr Ring Ouzel this morning! On the rabbit field near reception here #keeplooking. First record for
me at HH. Also 3 Common Terns flew over – new for lockdown. 30 House Martins and first
Sand Martin.
04-May 3 Common Sandpipers on the lakeside at 0630, calling well.
07-May First Reed Warbler heard singing.
08-May Turtle Dove heard singing at HH! My first record here.
09-May Little Grebe flight call audio recorded at 11.50pm.
11-May Lots of House Martins streaming steadily N over the lake here this morning; at least 50 in one
batch. Few Swifts as well.
13-May Lockdown restrictions on exercise relaxed.
