BTO Surveys – a request for help

Member and BTO Regional Officer Chris Hudson is requesting help with the following surveys:-

Peregrine Survey

This survey entails visits to 5Km Squares (i.e. 5Km by 5km).  These have been randomly chosen but contain less Low probability Sites.  There are 8 in N.E. Norfolk and another nearby in S.E. Norfolk – S.W. of Norwich.

There is more information on the BTO website (www.bto.org).  This is a summary:-

1.      You will need to obtain a copy of the Peregrine survey form from your local  organiser.

2.      We will ask you to search each square for suitable habitat (e.g. cliffs, crags, quarries, pylons, industrial buildings, cathedrals, bridges) and to look for the presence of Peregrines.

3.      You will be encouraged to make 3 visits to the square between March and mid July. The main aim of the first and second visit is to locate Peregrines in the square and establish their breeding status. On your third visit look for evidence of breeding success.

This is an interesting Survey for our Area. At first thought you may think that it is obvious that there are no breeding Peregrines in these Squares yet the Peregrines on Norwich Cathedral have laid four eggs and a few weeks ago there was another Peregrine-ringed in London, in the area.

Chris would like to see this Survey carried out thoroughly in N.E. Norfolk.

Your involvement would be to study a map and then visit places which could contain potential nesting sites.

Please contact Chris Hudson if you would like to help. The Priority ‘1’ Squares need to be allocated before the Priority ’0’ Squares.

Breeding Bird Survey (BBS).

There is good coverage for this but there are still some Squares without volunteers. They are:-

2144 Covered annually Horsham St Faith Access/routes fine
1225 New 2014 Nr Salle Park
1643 New 2014 Sheringham 50% sea
1435 Once covered Barningham Hall OK with permission
1538 Once covered Stonepit Hill OK with permission
2118 Once covered New Hainford Busy main road
0434 Never covered Burgh Stubbs OK with permission?
4614 Never covered Ormesby Broad Difficult but possible
0519 Never Covered Sparham Hole OK with permission

Most of them are a matter of gaining permission for access; maybe you have a contact. If you feel that you could take one of these Chris would be delighted.

Heronries Census (including Little Egrets).

All the known Heronries are being visited. It is very likely, however, that some have been overlooked or that a new Heronry may be started. Some ‘Heronries’ can consist of a single nest.

There used to be a large Heronry at the site of the Gt.Witchingham Wildlife Park. Where have they all gone. If you see a Heron you could help by trying to work out if it is nesting and, if so, where. Perhaps by talking to other birders you may become aware of a nest. If you find any nests please let Chris know and he will send you a Census Card.

BirdTrack.

If you don’t use BirdTrack or used to but didn’t find it suitable  Chris recommends that you have a look. It has been greatly developed and refined and is an excellent way to enter valuable records as well as to keep your own records.

Please contact Chris Hudson (Tel-01603 868805) if you are interested in helping,  would like to know more or discuss anything. Please pass this information on to anyone you know who may like to help.
